It sprang to life in the late 19th century, initially as a trading post near the Verdigris River, and quickly grew into a bustling community. The city's history is notably marked by the infamous Dalton Gang's attempted dual bank robbery in 1892, an event that has since become a part of local lore, celebrated annually during the Dalton Defenders Days.

The geography of Coffeyville is characterized by its location along the Verdigris River, which meanders through the town, providing a natural boundary and a serene backdrop. The surrounding landscape is predominantly flat, with wide-open spaces typical of the Great Plains, allowing for expansive views and a sense of openness. This setting contributes to the area's climate, which experiences hot summers and cold winters, reflective of the broader Midwestern weather patterns.
